Beakers, Brushes, & Boats: A STEAM Day Camp

Three Bay City nonprofits are coming together to offer a new day camp experience designed to get participants excited about…water. BaySail, the Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association and Studio 23/The Art Center have joined forces to offer “Beakers, Brushes & Boats: A STEAM Day Camp” to young people in 3rd – 6th grades. The camp will take place in Downtown Bay City, July 8-12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is available to the first 18 who register.

Campers will divide their time between the indoor classroom at Studio 23 and the outdoor classroom of Wenonah Park and the Saginaw River in Downtown Bay City. Each day will feature lessons in STEAM disciplines: science, technology, engineering, art and math facilitated by BaySail Director of Education Emily Nummer and Studio 23 Education Coordinator Autumn Reyes. “The camp experience will be very interactive,” explained Nummer. “Campers will participate in lessons about the Saginaw Bay watershed, the water cycle and simple machines, for example, as well as learning about maritime-related topics like nautical terms, knot tying and more.”

Each participant will spend at least 1.5 hours per day on the water as part of the crew of a Saginaw Bay Community Sailing Association “daysailer.” They’ll sail with 2 other campers and an adult skipper and learn the basic points of sail, steering and incorporating knots.

Registration fee is $199 per camper and includes all supplies and activities as well as breakfast, lunch, and snacks daily. Participation is limited to 18 youth in grades 3-6. Registration forms are available at www.baysailbaycity.org.
